History
Rushmere Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1986. A
civic league was formed in our community and we started meeting
at First Gravel Hill Baptist Church once a week to discuss our
future goals. We had a number of oppositions but God worked
things out in our favor. Due to the hard efforts of our
leaders, Mr. Henry Bradby and Ms. Phyllis Bloxom, we went into
operation in 1990. Our business leaders were as follow:
President, Mr. Henry Bradby, Secretary, Mrs. Rita Wilkerson and
Treasurer, Ms. Phyllis Bloxom. Our working leaders were, Mr.
William Bowser and Mr. Thomas Reese, Captain. Our current
business officers are as follow: President, Mr. Jeremiah
Jefferson, Secretary, Mrs. Bobbie Romig and Treasurer, Mr.
Herman Jones. Our current working leaders are as follow:
Chief, Mr. Keith Jones, Assistant Chief, Mr. Rudolph Jefferson,

Why I
Chose to be a Firefighter:
I remember the day that
there was a fire at the mobile home around the
corner where I lived. That fire took the life of
a father and his two little boys. I could see
the neighboring fire department responding to
the best of their ability, but the distance they
had to travel was too great. It seemed that always
around the holidays there were fires and those
fires always resulted in total loss of the
structures. When a fire occurred in Rushmere or
the Bacon's Castle area, the out come was always
devastating. I kept those memories in my mind. |
